Alpha Kidz is a free, drop-in after-school program that operates 5 days a week from 3:30–6:00 p.m for ages 6-12. In addition to the after-school program, we run a very popular summer program that operates 5 days a week from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

We provide a healthy snack twice daily, and children bring their lunches. However, we do have additional food on hand if a child cannot bring lunch. Our programs are designed to assist children/youth in developing important life skills, provide an opportunity to create positive relationships and promote healthy choices.

We provide children/youth with a safe place to be after school, doing activities that are chosen with their input. There is also a benefit for parents knowing that their children are safe after school while they finish their workday. We try to be outdoors as much as possible and take participants on at least one field trip per week.

As many of our participants come from low-income families, with a high proportion of newcomer children, these field trips are a way to introduce them to activities and attractions outside their immediate community. For most of them, these are places their families would never be able to afford to take them.

Alpha Kidz Includes

Outdoor Fun

We introduce kids to a variety of physical activities and stress the importance of staying fit and healthy. Many children spend most of their time indoors playing electronic games or watching television. We do not allow electronic devices during our program and provide many opportunities for children to explore their community and participate in fun, healthy outdoor activities.

Young Chefs

This is one of our most popular programs. Kids are taught kitchen safety, safe food handling, the importance of cleanliness, and how to follow a recipe. They also learn how to make nutritious snacks and simple meals.

Crafts & Games

This program teaches children how to make everyday crafts and gifts for special occasions. The crafts are alternated with a variety of board and card games, with a focus on cooperation, team play, and having fun rather than winning.

Library Learning

The Abbottsfield Public Library provides programs twice a month for our program. These have included robotics, Indigenous stories with an Elder, beading, group games, and many other activities.

Summer Field Trips

This includes trips to the Valley Zoo, Elk Island Park, Fort Edmonton, Borden Park, St. Albert Sprinkler Park, Royal Alberta Museum, Devonian Gardens, and as many sprinkler parks as we can manage.

Special Events

A variety of special events are held every year, including Water Wars, Pajama Day, It’s Everybody’s Birthday, and many more.
